Project Overview
The City of Elk Grove in cooperation with the City of Sacramento, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and the Federal Highway Administration are making improvements to the interchange, originally constructed in 1956. These improvements will provide efficient accessibility to and from State Route 99, as well as improvement to Sheldon Road to accommodate the current and projected traffic volumes for the City of Elk Grove.
Currently, this interchange is operating above its designed capacity, posing safety concerns and hampering traffic flow during peak periods. Modernizing the interchange will help accommodate current and projected traffic volumes along the Sheldon corridor. Along with other City roadway improvements, the new interchange will improve mobility and access to business, homes and planned future development.
What improvements will be made?
- A two-lane southbound loop off-ramp and a diagonal southbound on-ramp within the southwest quadrant
- A two-lane northbound loop on-ramp with one mixed flow lane and one high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) bypass lane and a diagonal northbound off-ramp within the southeast quadrant
- A diagonal northbound on-ramp within the northeast quadrant
- West Stockton Boulevard would remain at its existing location.
- Replaces existing bridge over State Route 99
- Improves intersections and provides bike lanes, landscaped medians, and sidewalks on Sheldon Road
- Installing on-ramp metering with high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) bypass lanes
- Relocates and expands the existing Park & Ride lot
The interchange is currently under construction, with anticipated completion in the fall of 2009. Initial construction occurred in December 2007, with more significant work activities beginning in February 2007. Throughout construction, the City and its crews will coordinate closely with area businesses and landowners to keep residents and the traveling public well informed about any activities that may affect traffic.
